Frequently Asked Questions

*WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN TRADITIONAL LASER TREATMENT AND IPL LASER TREATMENT?
They both have a similar mechanism of action (photo-thermal), however two significant benefits of IPL are: more speed and less sensation. Larger hand-pieces means IPL technology can perform procedures up to ten times faster than traditional lasers and with active cooling in the hand-pieces, the sensation on the treated area is far less intense.

*WHO IS A CANDIDATE FOR TREATMENT?
Men and Women of all skin types and hair colors can benefit from our DualMax Laser treatment with the exception of very dark African American skin tones. Unfortunately, due to the pigmentation in extremely dark skin tones, IPL treatment is not recommended. Treatments are customized according to your skin type, hair color, and treatment area.

*IS IPL SKIN TREATMENT PAINFUL?
While everyone's pain tolerance is different, most of our clients experience nothing more than mild discomfort. Our patients tell us that treatment with our DualMax laser is much more comfortable than traditional lasers. Our lasers are equipped with a cooling device that makes the treatment comfortable for the patient.

*HOW DOES IPL LASER TREATMENT WORK FOR SKIN REJUVENATION?

Our DualMax Laser is applied in a series of gentle pulses over the treatment area. The light penetrates through the skin and is absorbed by the brown spots, scars, wrinkles, redness, and uneven skin pigmentation. Sun spots/age spots will initially become darker but will then flake off in a few days. Broken capillaries and spider veins are re-absorbed by the body within several days.

These treatments have been proven very effective on spider veins. As opposed to the side of the nose or upper cheek where vessels may disappear within a few days, the deeper, thicker vessels often found on the legs will take longer to resolve (up to 10 weeks in some individuals). The pulsed light systems are not designed to treat large leg veins.

*CAN YOU TREAT MY SKIN WITH PSORIASIS OR ECZEMA?
Yes we can! As a matter of fact, pulsed light treatments can enhance the healing process of these two skin conditions.

*CAN IPL CLEAR UP MY ACTIVE ACNE AND ACNE SCARRING?
Yes IPL treatment is very effective for acne and scarring! The selective band of wavelengths emitted from the IPL target pigment to destroy the P-Acne bacteria, without the requirement of any topical chemical agents. The light also stimulates collagen production to help resolve the acne scarring.

*ARE THERE ANY POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS?
Immediately following treatment, the skin may appear flushed, brown pigmented spots may appear darker, and capillaries may be more visible. In rare instances, temporary swelling and/or blistering can occur. Side effects are rare with IPL treatment.

*HOW MANY TREATMENTS WILL I NEED?
For optimal results, a series of 3 to 5 treatments is recommended but may vary depending on the individual and the area to be treated. Treatments are spaced 3-4 weeks apart. A maintenance treatment once or twice a year may be desired in order to maintain results.

*ARE THERE ANY FACTORS THAT MIGHT AFFECT TREATMENT?
Very dark African American skin types are not good candidates for IPL treatment. The pigmentation in the dark skin absorbs the light in a negative way and can cause lightened skin in the treated area. Certain medications such as muscle relaxants, anti-depressants, anti-cancer drugs, acne medications, and topical creams containing Retin-A, will have an effect on treatment parameters. These factors may make your body more sensitive to light, which don’t exclude clients from treatments but must be disclosed prior to treatment. A test patch may be performed prior to treatment to ensure safe and effective results for our clients.

Common contraindications associated with IPL Laser treatments and who should or should not be treated

  • Very dark African American skin types are not good candidates for IPL treatment. The pigmentation in the dark skin absorbs the light in a negative way and can cause lightened skin in the treated area.
  • Pregnancy - Those who are pregnant must be advised they are not the ideal candidates for treatment because of the hormonal and pigmentation changes that can occur during pregnancy, hence decreasing the effectiveness of treatment.
  • Chemotherapy – Patients undergoing chemotherapy will often have a weakened immune system which implies they are not ideal candidates for intense pulsed light treatments unless adequate time has passed since their last chemotherapy treatment (about 3 years).
  • Photo-sensitive Drugs – Certain photo-sensitive drugs may heighten the response of intense pulsed light treatments including redness, inflammation and hyper-pigmentation. These may include retin-A, acne medications, anti-cancer medications, antidepressants, muscle relaxants, sedatives, antihistamines, antimicrobials, hypoglycemics, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Ideally it is recommended that you stop taking photo-sensitive drugs 2-4 weeks prior to receiving any pulsed light treatment, but dependent on the degree of photo-sensitivity, in some cases this period of time can be less.
  • Suntanned Skin - If sun tanned skin is treated, the increased level of melanin in the skin can cause unpredictable results including long term pigmentation changes. It is recommended for you to be out of the sun 2-3 weeks prior to treatment or for the appropriate time frame for your skin to return to your natural color (time varies for each individual). It is also recommended that you do not tan or use tanning products in the time frame between a prescribed series of pulsed light treatments as overactive melanin could cause a pigmentation effect.

How to prepare for your IPL Skin Rejuvenation treatment

  • We ask that you print and fill out the IPL New Patient Form and the Consent Form prior to coming to your appointment. Should you not have access to these forms, please arrive 15 minutes prior to your scheduled appointment to fill out the forms to ensure that there is adequate time for your treatment.
  • We ask that you are freshly showered or bathed with completely clean skin, without lotions, creams or fragrances of any kind before coming in. Remove any makeup or creams from the area to be treated.
  • Please avoid any sun exposure and/or sunless tanning 4 weeks prior to your treatment and 4 weeks after treatments.
  • RECENTLY TANNED SKIN CANNOT BE TREATED! If treated, you may develop hypopigmentation (white spots) after treatment and this may not clear for 6 months.

What to expect after IPL treatment

  • You may experience some redness and/or warmth or sensitivity at the treatment site, which is normal and can be cooled with a cold wet compresses if desired. It is recommended to avoid perfumed deodorants, heavily chlorinated pools, and/or hot whirlpool baths, saunas, etc. for 12 – 24 hours after treatments.
  • Limit your sun exposure as much as possible subsequent to treatment.
  • Use a high SPF factor sunscreen when exposed to the sun between and after treatments.
  • Cool any areas which remain warm after treatment with cooling aloe vera gels, cold compresses or frozen gel packs.
  • Discontinue sun bed use and 'fake tanning' products.
  • Do not exfoliate the skin for 1 week after the treatment.
  • Your skin may be more sensitive to certain skin care products so please use mild products only.
  • Do not pick blisters or skin crusting as this may lead to a scar.
  • For optimum results, it is important that you keep all of your appointments. Your follow-up treatments have a direct effect on the final results of your treatments.
