Benefits of IPL Therapy
*Waxing, electrolysis, and even shaving can be cumbersome treatments, which leads to discomfort, skin irritation, and ingrown hairs. IPL treatments with our DualMax laser are significantly more comfortable with no skin irritation. The DualMax laser has a built in cooling device to reduce the sensation of heat at the treated area.
*Based on the absorption of specific wavelengths of light energy which are transformed into heat below the surface of the skin, Intense Pulsed Light compromises the body’s ability to re-grow hair in the treated area, resulting in permanent and long-lasting results. IPL treatment is effective on most skin types, with the exception of very dark African American skin due to the pigmentation of the skin type.
*The large surface area covered by the specialized IPL hand-pieces enables fast and effective treatments. With no post-treatment discomfort, it’s easy to receive treatments at lunch and then return to work that same day. A full set of legs could be treated in about 1 hour, and treatments are effective without the requirement to have hair grow out before the treatment, meaning you can shave right up until your IPL session.

Frequently Asked Questions
*HOW DOES IPL HAIR REMOVAL WORK?
The newest generation of Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) systems, produces a precise beam of light energy, which safely transmits through the skin, selectively targeting pigment in the hair follicles. When this light is absorbed by the pigment in the follicle of the hair, it converts to heat, which in turn causes thermal damage to the follicle and permanently destroys the hair. The heat also disables the cells responsible for new hair growth.

*IS IPL HAIR REMOVAL PAINFUL?
While everyone's pain tolerance is different, most of our clients experience minimal discomfort. Our patients tell us that treatment with our DualMax IPL is much more comfortable than traditional lasers and waxing. Our lasers are equipped with a cooling device that makes the treatment more comfortable for the patient.

*WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN TRADITIONAL LASER HAIR REMOVAL AND IPL REMOVAL?
They both have a similar mechanism of action (photo-thermal), however two significant benefits of IPL are: more speed and less sensation. Larger hand-pieces means IPL technology can perform procedures up to ten times faster than traditional lasers and with active cooling in the hand-pieces, the sensation on the treated area is far less intense.

Men and Women of all skin types and hair colors can benefit from our DualMax Laser treatment with the exception of very dark African American skin tones. Unfortunately, due to the pigmentation in extremely dark skin tones, IPL treatment is not recommended. Treatments are customized according to your skin type, hair color, and treatment area. Virtually any body part including underarms, legs, back, face, arms, neck, and bikini area (females only) can be treated.

*HOW MANY TREATMENTS WILL I REQUIRE?
Hair grows in three cycles called Anagen, Catagen, and Telogen. IPL laser technology most effectively interacts with hair in the Anagen (or active growth) phase when the hair is highest in pigment. Hence multiple treatments are required to accomplish permanent hair reduction. With multiple treatments we can ensure that all hair follicles are being disabled. On average approximately 20% reduction will be noticed in the initial treatment and as much as 95% reduction can be realized in five to six treatments. A maintenance treatment once or twice a year may be desired in order to maintain results. For all maintenance treatments, we offer 20% off the regular price (does not apply to packages). Each treatment should be spaced 4-6 weeks apart.

*CAN I SHAVE HAIR BETWEEN TREATMENTS?
This is an excellent question and the answer is YES! Remember, you definitely cannot tweeze or wax. If you tweeze or wax between treatments, you physically remove the target hence reduce the Intense Pulsed Light’s ability to destroy it (you can’t destroy what isn’t there). You can however shave between treatments as the objective is to interact with the matrix or bulb and shaft of the hair, which is untouched by shaving. Surface hair must be removed prior to IPL treatment to ensure the laser makes correct contact with the area. Shaving prior to your appointment will cut down on treatment time and save you money (as we do charge a shaving fee).
*WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A BIKINI LINE TREATMENT AND A BRAZILIAN TREATMENT FOR FEMALES?
A Brazilian treats more hair than a bikini treatment. A bikini line treatment focuses on the front and sides (what would be visible in a swimsuit), while the Brazilian treats the front, sides, and everything in between, treating all hair in the vagina area.

*ARE THERE ANY FACTORS THAT MIGHT AFFECT TREATMENT?
Very dark African American skin types are not good candidates for IPL treatment. The pigmentation in the dark skin absorbs the light in a negative way and can cause lightened skin in the treated area. Certain medications such as muscle relaxants, anti-depressants, anti-cancer drugs, acne medications, and topical creams containing Retin-A, will have an effect on treatment parameters. These factors may make your body more sensitive to light, which don’t exclude clients from treatments but must be disclosed prior to treatment.

*CAN YOU TREAT THE HAIR ON MY BACK WHERE I HAVE A TATTOO?
There is a possibility that the hair removal hand-piece may also cause some removal of pigment and potentially fade the tattoo. Hence it is not recommended to remove hair on areas which are also tattooed and if you choose to continue with treatment in a tattooed area, you assume the risk of potential fading of the tattoo.

Common contraindications associated with IPL Therapy and who
should not be treated.
- Dark African American skin types are not good candidates for IPL treatment. The pigmentation in the dark skin absorbs the light in a negative way and can cause lightened skin in the treated area.
- Pregnancy - Those who are pregnant must be advised they are not the ideal candidates for treatment because of the hormonal and pigmentation changes that can occur during pregnancy, hence decreasing the effectiveness of treatment.
- Hirsutism – A condition characterized by unnatural hair growth, these individuals are not the ideal candidates for permanent hair reduction. During treatment for these individuals, realistic expectations must be set for the outcome of treatment.Hair ‘management’ is the best way to describe the procedures in these cases.
- Cancer and Chemotherapy – Patients undergoing chemotherapy will necessarily have a weakened immune system which implies they are not ideal candidates for intense pulsed light treatments unless adequate time has passed since their last chemotherapy treatment (about 3 years).
- Photo-sensitive Drugs – Certain photo-sensitive drugs may heighten the response of intense pulsed light treatments including redness, inflammation and hyper-pigmentation. These may include retin-A, Accutane, acne medications, anti-cancer medications, antidepressants, muscle relaxants, sedatives, antihistamines, antimicrobials, hypoglycemics, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Ideally it is recommended that you stop taking photo-sensitive drugs at least 4 weeks prior to receiving any pulsed light treatment.
- Suntanned Skin and Sunless Tanners - If sun tanned skin is treated, the increased level of melanin in the skin can cause unpredictable results including long term pigmentation changes. It is recommended for you to be out of the sun 2-4 weeks prior to treatment or for the appropriate time frame for your skin to return to your natural color (time varies for each individual). It is also recommended to discontinue sun tanning and sunless tanners through the course of treatments. If you have to be in the sun, you must use a sunscreen with a high SPF.
How to prepare for your IPL Hair Removal Therapy
- We ask that you print and fill out the IPL New Patient Form and the Consent Form prior to coming to your appointment. Should you not have access to these forms, please arrive 15 minutes prior to your scheduled appointment to fill out the forms to ensure that there is adequate time for your treatment.
- The treatment area must be shaved prior to treatment. We also ask that you shave the area to be treated prior to your appointment. Hair on the treated area does not allow for an effective treatment. We do charge a shaving fee of $75. Patients are typically more comfortable shaving themselves than when we have to shave them.
- We ask that you are freshly showered or bathed with completely clean skin, without lotions, creams or fragrances of any kind before coming in. Remove any makeup or creams from the area to be treated.
- Avoid all waxing, tweezing, bleaching, and threading at least 4 weeks prior to your treatment, and throughout your treatment series.
- RECENTLY TANNED SKIN CANNOT BE TREATED! If treated, you may develop hypopigmentation (white spots) after treatment and this may not clear for 6 months.
What to expect after IPL Therapy
- You may experience some redness and/or warmth or sensitivity at the treatment site, which is normal and can be cooled with a cold wet compresses if desired. It is recommended to avoid perfumed deodorants, heavily chlorinated pools, and/or hot whirlpool baths, saunas, etc. for 12 – 24 hours after treatments.
- Anywhere from 2-30 days after the treatment, shedding of the surface hair may occur and this may appear as new hair growth. This is NOT new hair growth, but dead hair pushing its way out of the follicle. You can clean and remove the hair by washing or scrubbing the area with a wet washcloth or loofa sponge.
- Limit your sun exposure as much as possible subsequent to treatment.
- Use a high SPF factor sunscreen when exposed to the sun between and after treatments.
- Cool any areas which remain warm after treatment with cooling aloe vera gels, cold compresses or frozen gel packs.
- Discontinue sun bed use and 'fake tanning' products.
- Do not wax or tweeze treatment site between hair removal treatments.
- Do not exfoliate the skin for 1 week after the treatment.
- Your skin may be more sensitive to certain skin care products so please use mild products only.
- For optimum results, it is important that you keep all of your appointments. Your follow-up treatments have a direct effect on the final results of your treatment.
